Dynamic Assessment
In order to get a sense of a child or young person’s cognitive functioning I use dynamic assessment in order to inform strategies and support children and young people.
Dynamic assessment (DA) is an assessment that explores how someone learns, rather than what they have learnt.
DA is based on the premise that more can be learnt from a child’s cognitive development by working with the young person, rather than assessing their unassisted performance (Lauchlan and Carrigan, 2013).
A key part of DA is that the child/young person will be given help, to allow the individual to show what can be achieved with appropriate cues and prompts.
DA is therefore not an assessment that is standardised, like formal intelligence testing, as it does not compare results with age-related norms.
- Academic assessments
I can assess an individual’s academic strengths and difficulties. I can evaluate the child/young person’s listening, speaking, reading, writing, and mathematical skills, as well as oral reading fluency, maths fluency and early reading skills.
This information can then be used in order to implement strategies and measure progress.
